The bill seeking to amend the National Honours Act, and limit the number of people, who are given the award in a particular year, has passed 2nd Reading in the House Of Representatives.

The amendment, proposed by Minority Leader, Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila, also proposed the change of criteria used in measuring who is deserving be changed from “distinguished public service” to “extraordinary achievements.”

The lawmakers said the honours have become a national disgrace and most of those who are given the awards have done nothing to deserve them.

Most of the lawmakers who spoke during the debate were in support of the motion, but the amendment which sought to restrict the number of awardees to 100 faced sterner test as some representatives opposed that amendent.
