Ogedegbe Primary School, Delta State on Monday defeated Uwa Primary School of Edo state 4-2 in the final of the Channels National Kids Cup to clinch the first position in the tournament.

This feat by Ogedegbe Primary School makes it the first contender to lift the gold trophy since the competition advanced from state to National level.

The final match between the schools from neighbouring Delta and Edo states at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos lived up to its billing as both teams battle for the first place in a competition that commenced on the 22 May with 16 teams from the different states.

Ogedegbe Primary School drew the first blood toward the end of the first half with a perfected netted volley by a striker from the Orange team.

Commencing the second half, Ogedegbe Primary School continued with their domination on-field as they scored another goal to make it a two-goal lead and in a quick salvo made it 3-0.

With much pressure from the other team, Uwa Primary School fought back and pressed on towards the goal area of the Orange team. A defensive blunder from the leading team resulted in a penalty which produced the first goal for the Edo side.

The goal from the spot-kick was replied almost immediately by the Delta team that netted their fourth goal.

Confident of a win and unwary of the speed and determination of the Red team, the Delta Primary School team lower their defence leading to another goal from Uwa Primary school.

It was full time and Ogedebe Primary school defeated Uwa Primary School 4-2 to lift the first ever Channels National Kids Cup.

The more spectators at the stadium for the final match include the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola; his Delta State counterpart, Emmanuel Uduaghan, the Chairman of Channels Television, John Momoh, and the Delta State Commissioner for Sports, Amaju Pinnick.

Channels Kids Cup is an initiative of Channels Television which is aimed at supporting grassroot football. The competition which began in 2009 in Lagos state has grown to a national level with the fifth season which was supported by the Lagos and Delta state Governments, Dufil Prima Foods – makers of Indomie Noodles and several others.
