more TroopsThe National Human Rights Commission in Nigeria has absolved the military of human rights abuses in the fight against insurgency in the north-east.

After critical investigation of the evidence provided by the Amnesty International to back their indictment of the security operatives last week, the commission said on Wednesday that the report was not in anyway indicting.

In a meeting with the representative of the office of the High Commission for Human Rights in West Africa, Mr Andrea Ori, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Professor Bem Angwe, exonerated the military of human abuses.

Mr Ori is in Nigeria for an official visit.

Professor Angwe also called on the international community to do more than pay lip services to the fight against terrorism in Nigeria.

“We believe that the international community do have a role to play here because most of the ammunitions and devices being used by the insurgent groups are manufactured by multinational companies in the international community.

“We believe that a good starting point will be a clear regulation of the proliferation of light weapons, small arms and such devices being used by members of the insurgent groups.

He emphasised that why Nigerians on daily basis cry from the activities of the insurgents groups, multinational companies go to the banks smiling from the profit made from the arms exported to Nigeria.

Pledging the West African commission’s support to Nigeria, Mr Ori said: “We are here to work with you, to support you. We know that the challenges are very high. But we really sympathise and empathise with you. We really encourage you to do the nice job that you are already doing”.

Nigeria’s military has been involved in counter-terrorism operations in the north east where insurgency and terror attacks by members of an Islamic sect, Boko Haram, have been more prominent.
