Obiano-NigeriaIn the spirit of marking the 54th Independence Anniversary of Nigeria, Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, says Nigeria would emerge from its present difficulties stronger and more prosperous.

He was speaking during a church service at the Cathedral Church of St. Faith, Awka, where the people gathered to pray for the country and the state ahead of the independence celebration on Wednesday.

The Governor took the congregation through the various achievements of the President at the national level and the giant strides Anambra was taking as a state.

He noted that already, against all odds, the country has become the largest economy in Africa at 54, while Anambra State, at 23, has been wrestled from the hands of criminals with security being restored once more to it.

Delivering the homily, the Anglican Bishop of Awka Diocese, Right Reverend Alexander Ibezim, reiterated the need for purposeful and honest leadership in both the federal and state levels, as the country requires compassionate leaders who with fear of God would stand on the truth, uphold the rule of law and promote the welfare of the people.

He commended President Goodluck Jonathan for his efforts in fighting terrorism and tackling poverty in the country. He also appreciated the State Governor for his effort in ridding the state of criminals and hoodlums.

As the church service wound down, former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Emeka Anyaoku, made a passionate appeal to the Federal Government to look into the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, since the President has promised to fix all federal roads in the country.

He described the road as a slaughter slab that needs urgent attention.

The church service brought together government functionaries led by Governor Willie Obiano, service chiefs in the state, the clergy, the congregation and the people of Anambra State.
