Former Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshall Alex Badeh, has been granted bail in the sum of two billion Naira and two sureties.

In his ruling at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday, Justice Okon Abang held that the two sureties must provide a bail bond of one billion Naira each and also be owners of landed properties in any part of the Federal Capital Territory.

The sureties, according to Justice Abang, must provide original title deed of their landed properties along with two passport photographs with sworn affidavit before the court.

Alex Badeh is standing trial on a 10-count charge of money laundering, corruption and criminal breach of trust.

He is to remain in the custody of the Nigerian Prisons, pending the fulfillment of his bail conditions.

Justice Abang has fixed March 14 for commencement of his trial.

The former Defence Chief was was invited for questioning by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on February 8, 2016 and has since been held.

He had earlier approached the court seeking his release. His lawyer argued that case of fraud for which the applicant was invited is ordinarily bailable.

He also argued that the applicant’s health condition was bad and that he had recently undergone a surgery on his spine which required constant post-operative follow-up by his physician as well as renal condition which he was currently undergoing treatment for.

Alex Badeh served as the Chief of Defense Staff between January 2014 and July 2015, when President Muhammadu Buhari appointed new service chiefs.
