Local government elections were conducted across Osun state on Saturday with voters turning out in different polling units across the state.

Channels Television monitored the exercise in different parts of the states and observed that voter turnout was high in some polling units and low in others.

Residents across the state also complied to some extent with government’s restriction order on unauthorised movement of human and vehicles during the conduct of the election.

Addressing newsmen after casting his vote at Ward 2, Unit 1 in his hometown, Iragbiji, Governor Gboyega Oyetola lauded the peaceful atmosphere that characterised the conduct of the election.

Oyetola noted that local government administration is pertinent to grassroot development, as he averred that serenity and peaceful conduct of the exercise is attestation that democracy is thriving in the country.

Resident of Ire and a member of the All Progressives Congress who monitored the exercise at Ward 11, Unit 4 of the town, Adebayo Adeleke, bemoaned the insinuation of illegality of the exercise by detractors.

Adeleke expressed confidence in the quality of the candidates fielded by the APC in the election, saying the winners will be officially announced later by the Osun Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC).

Other political parties, including the major opposition party, PDP, shunned the elections.

They had earlier objected to the conduct of the election and instituted a court case challenging it.
