‘Rare Gem In History,’ Tinubu Hails Ladoja On Coronation As Olubadan

President Bola Tinubu praised Ladoja’s resilience during political struggles at the Senate and during his impeachment battle as the governor of Oyo.

President Bola Tinubu has extolled the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, at his coronation, describing him as “a rare gem in history”.

Tinubu described the event as an honour to witness, noting that Ladoja’s journey reflected perseverance and reliability.

 

Ladoja received the staff of office from Governor Seyi Makinde on September 26, 2025.

 

“Today is an exciting day. It’s a great honour to witness your coronation, to witness history,” the President said in Ibadan on Friday.

“It’s a great honour and moment of history that you ascend the throne of your forbearers. It’s my prayer that you will live long and be celebrated as one of the rare gems of history to ascend the throne of your forefathers.

“It is my honour, my joy, my pleasure to wish you this day and many more days ahead of joy, prosperity and relevance in the institution of democracy, history of Obaship in Nigeria,” Tinubu said.

Tinubu also praised the new Olubadan’s resilience during political struggles, recalling their shared history at the Senate and during his impeachment battle as the governor of Oyo.

Recalling their political history, he said, “Your perseverance, determination and reliability during the impeachment struggle remain impeccable.”

The president prayed that the monarch would live long and be remembered as a celebrated leader in Nigeria’s history.

The President also used the occasion to give Nigerians insight into the state of the economy.

“Today I am honoured and proud to give you cheering news that the economy has turned the corner. Growth and prosperity now await us,” Tinubu declared.

Tinubu also thanked Ibadan residents for their support during the 2023 elections, adding that when he was driven down from the event, he “felt the joy of homecoming. The cheers and excitement showed in the people’s faces.”

 

 

Colourful Coronation 

 

 

Ladoja was crowned on Friday and received the staff of office from the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, amid cheers from guests and Ibadan residents.

The ceremony followed his receipt of the Akoko leaf at Labosinde Compound and the crown at Ose Meji Temple in Ibadan South-East.

The colourful event was attended by dignitaries from different walks of life.

They include serving and former governors, traditional and religious leaders.

Notable guests included the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade; Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Ọlaoye; and Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III.

Former governors Donald Duke, Ibikunle Amosun, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and Rabiu Kwankwaso also attended.

Security was tight, with operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Army deployed to ensure a hitch-free ceremony.

The Olubadan stool is respected for its unique succession system, where chiefs ascend step-by-step through established ranks.
