Don’t Order Execution Of Inmates, Falana Urges Ambode

Don't Order Execution Of Inmates, Falana Urges AmbodeHuman rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has appealed to the Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, not to order the execution of persons sentenced to death in the state.

In a letter to the Governor, a copy of which was sent to Channels Television, Mr Falana referred to a statement credited to the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Adeniyi Kazeem, to the effect that Governor Ambode would soon decide the fate of condemned prisoners on death row in the state.

The senior lawyer insisted that death by hanging or firing squad violates the rights to freedom from torture.

He cited a judgement of the State High Court, saying: “The Lagos State High Court held that while a person who commits murder may be sentenced to death, it is illegal and unconstitutional to execute such death sentence by hanging or firing squad, as it will lead to the violation of his fundamental right to freedom from torture guaranteed by the constitution”.

He asked Governor Ambode not to sign a death warrant authorising the killing of any condemned prisoner, but instead commute the death sentences to life imprisonment.

“On the basis of the valid and subsisting judgment of the Lagos High Court on the illegality of the execution of the death penalty in Lagos State, we urge Your Excellency not to sign a death warrant authorising the killing of any condemned prisoner either by hanging, firing squad or any other means whatsoever.

“In the circumstance, Your Excellency may wish to commute the death sentences of all condemned prisoners in Lagos State to life imprisonment forthwith,” Mr Falana said.

Osinbajo Inaugurates SDGs Private Sector Advisory Group

Yemi Osinbajo Inaugurates SDGs Private Sector Advisory GroupActing President Yemi Osinbajo says the Nigerian elite has a responsibility to ensure that they do something fundamental to transform the Nigerian society.

Professor Osinbajo was speaking at the inauguration of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Private Sector Advisory Group at the Presidential Villa.

According to him, countries that have pulled their people out of poverty succeeded because the elite in such societies decided to do so.

Some of the targets of the 17 SDGs, which have taken over from the millennium development goals include: to overcome poverty, reduce hunger, introduce good health and quality education, as well as good jobs and economic growth.

The event was attended by captains of industry in the Nigeria, including the Chairman of Channels Media Group, Mr John Momoh.

The Federal Government believes that those present at the gathering are part of the Nigerian elite that must play a role to achieve the sustainable development goals.

In her address, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Mrs Adejoke Orelope, noted that no country can survive without the private sector.

She challenged the participants to bring their expertise to bear on the achievement of the goals.

The Chairman of Sahara Group, Tonye Cole, identified the non-involvement of the private sector as one of the reasons responsible for the non-performance of the millennium development goals.

In their various remarks, Mr Momoh and other sector representatives promised to unleash their experience and arsenals behind the goals.

Tinubu Advises Nigerian Government To Harmonise Monetary, Fiscal Policy

Bola Tinubu, Monetary Policy, Fiscal PolicyA former Governor of Lagos State, Senator Bola Tinubu, is proposing a harmonisation of Nigeria’s monetary and fiscal policy.

The recommendation is in line with efforts to restructure the nation’s economy for the benefit of Nigerians, he said.

Mr Tinubu, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), made the suggestion on Wednesday at a lecture on strategic leadership at the National Defence College (NDC) in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

He called for the realignment of trade policy with a meaningful industrial base supported by a more potent agricultural sector.

The former governor of Lagos State advised the Federal Government not to allow cheap imports to impede the development of industries and sectors strategic to Nigeria’s enduring economic future.

“Strategic objectives during this period of economic uncertainty must be to re-engineer the economy bottom up, diversify the economic base, strengthen our industrial base, modernise infrastructure, enhance agriculture and provide employment,” he said.

Lessons From Boko Haram Crisis

Lecturing the participants of Course 25 of the NDC, the APC leader also outlined the lessons learnt from the fight against insurgency and the threat posed by widespread poverty.

“We have learnt cardinal lessons from the Boko Haram crisis. First, we must govern justly and for the benefit of the people to prevent the recurrence of violent extremism in the future.

“Widespread poverty caused by an unjust allocation of income, wealth and resources provides fertile ground for extremist ideologies that run contrary to the inclusive democracy we seek to perfect.

“Protracted years of gross mis-governance are a down payment on the rise of extremism,” Tinubu pointed out.

The Commandant of the college, Rear Admiral Samuel Alade, on his part, asked African leaders to imbibe the ideals of strategic leadership.

The lecture series, which were part of the requirements for NDC participants, were aimed at producing leaders who would proffer solutions to the problems of their countries.

Life Beyond Oil: Fashola Advocates Reforms That Eliminate Corruption

The Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola is concerned about the country’s response to the abundance of oil.

At the 30th anniversary lecture of the law firm of George Etomi and Partners, Governor Fashola spoke on the topic “Life Without Oil”. The Governor believes that such a future was not reasonably foreseeable.

He wants more focus on how the country can develop herself and her people away from oil.

“The question that seems more appropriate is whether a better life with oil is possible. The answer I will offer is an emphatic yes. The road to that better life is not too difficult. It requires us to eliminate corruption at all levels of the oil industry. It requires us to reform NNPC especially in terms of personnel and replace them with more committed professionals.

“The road to that better life requires us to understand that although oil is currently selling at over $100 per barrel, it has not always been so and will not remain so,” he said.

Governor Fashola also referred to statement credited to Senator Chris Anyanwu a few days earlier on the floor of the Senate, during the consideration of the 2014 Budget, that the Navy does not have enough money to fuel her ships, as well as the complaints of the Inspector-General of Police that he did not have enough money for his men. He called on Nigerians not to keep quiet about the need for the country to move in the right direction.

Fashola Funding APC Registration From State Treasury – Lagos PDP

The Lagos State Chapter of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, has accused the Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, of sponsoring the ongoing All Progressives Congress, APC membership registration from the State Treasury, while at the same time crippling governance in order to participate and monitor the said registration exercise.

In a statement signed by the Publicity Secretary of the PDP in Lagos State, Mr. Taofik Gani, the party also berates what it termed mismanagement of funds and maladministration by some of the 57 Council Chairmen whom they alleged have replicated same act in their various Council Areas.

“We can now confirm that the ongoing APC membership registration, especially in Lagos State, is enjoying the sponsorship of Governor Fashola. The Governor has also condoned the decision of the 57 Council chairmen to divert their council funds into the clearly party exercise.

“They have spent at least 7billion Naira paying for the registration materials, staff, massive promo adverts at all levels, and inducing persons to register. This amount could have been better utilised to improve the lives of Lagosians”, the statement read.

Consequently, the Lagos PDP has hinted that it may invite the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to probe the allegations.

“This party, APC, has no membership yet and cannot claim any financial membership as well. Who, then is bankrolling their ongoing membership registration process? Governor Fashola must give us answer to this question.

“Lagosians demand to know. We have stronger, direct and circumstantial evidence for the EFCC to proof that the ongoing APC membership registration is being sponsored from the Lagos State treasury”, it concluded.
