At Least One Dead As Residents Protest Death Of Remo Stars Player

 

Some aggrieved residents of Sagamu in Ogun state have taken to the streets to protest the death of a player of Remo stars football club, Tiyamiyu Kazeem.

Conflicting reports emerged on Saturday over the death of Tiyamiyu, the Assistant Captain and Defender with the club.

The police claimed that he was knocked down by a vehicle while trying to cross the expressway in order to evade arrest by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

But eyewitness accounts said the police officers had “pushed” Tiyamiyu out of a moving vehicle, leading to his death.

The protest on Monday, according to an eyewitness went violent as at least one person was feared dead.

Although the Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, could not confirm this when contacted.

Reports have it that the protest got violent while the aggrieved protesters allegedly attempted to set a police station in the town ablaze.

The protesters were said to have condemned the death of the footballer demanding justice while a thorough investigation into the alleged killing should be immediately instituted.

The Ogun State Police Command on Saturday confirmed the death of the Assistant Captain and Defender of Remo Stars Football club, Tiyamiyu Kazeem and ordered the arrest of one of its own involved in the soccer player’s demise.

According to the police, Kazeem was knocked down by a vehicle while trying to cross the expressway in order to evade arrest.

However, the club, quoting an eyewitness, said men of the police’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) had “pushed” Kazeem out of a moving vehicle, leading to his death.

 

According to Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, Kazeem’s arrest was ordered after he was suspected to be wearing a military outfit.

“A Police Inspector attached to Zonal Intervention Squad Obada-Oko in Abeokuta said to have received information about the deceased that he always put on military apparel knowing fully well that he is not a military personnel. 

“Based on the information, the Inspector went to Shagamu and saw the deceased putting on a military cap consequent upon which he got him arrested.

“On the way to Abeokuta, the vehicle they were traveling with developed a mechanical fault and while the officer was trying to rectify the fault, the arrested person jumped down from the vehicle to escape. 

“In his bid to run across the road, an oncoming vehicle which is on high speed knocked him down and he died on the spot.”

“Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Police Command, has ordered the immediate arrest of the officer for his unprofessional act of leaving an arrested person alone in the vehicle.

“A full-scale investigation into the case has commenced by the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department.”

The eyewitness account quoted by the Club, however, contradicted with the Police’s.

According to the account, which was posted on the Club’s Twitter account, “The SARS officer stopped Tiyamiyu Kazeem insisting that he was a Yahoo Boy, he brought out his identity (ID) card to identify himself as a player of Remo Stars FC but the officer insisted on taking him to the nearest police station in Sagamu.

“Tiyamiyu and Sanni obliged, followed the SARS officers, only for them to notice that they were driving towards Sagamu-Abeokuta Expressway, then the guys questioned to know were the SARS officers were taking them to, but this prompted them to stop the car and push him (Tiyamiyu) out of the car, whereby an unknowing vehicle knocked him down.” 

According to the Club, Kazeem was immediately rushed to Fakoya Hospital in Sagamu, where he was confirmed dead.

 

Amapakabo Wants Rangers To Hold On To Celebration

The Flying Antelopes recorded an impressive 2-1 win over relegated, Ikorodu United on Sunday in Abeokuta to boost the chances of winning their seventh top-flight title.

Amapakabo told Channels Television that although the side are close to winning the title they still have to win the last day match against El Kanemi Warriors to be properly crowned the undisputed champions.

Enugu Rangers are top on the league table with  60 points; three ahead of closest challengers, Rivers United with a game to play.

Remo Stars Promoted

Meanwhile, coach of Remo Stars, Nduka Ugbade says his side are not carried away after gaining promotion to the Nigeria Professional Football League next season.

Coach Ugbade told Channels Television that the team would rather concentrate on their last league game against UNICEM Rovers at home.

No matter the outcome of the game, Remo Stars are heading to the NPFL for the first time, having recorded an unassailable 28 points in their Division B1 of the NNL.

But Ugbade says they plan to finish a successful campaign on a high in front of their fans in Ijebu-Ode to justify the investment of club owner, Kunle Soname.

Federation Cup: Rangers Qualify For Quarter Finals

Federation CupRangers Football Club of Enugu State have qualified for the quarter finals of the 2015 Federation Cup.

Rangers secured a 3-2 victory over Kwara United also known as the Harmony Boys of Kwara on Thursday.

The first goal of the game played at the Area 3 Play Ground in Abuja came in the 25th minute of the match for Kwara United through a left foot volley by Evans Iyoro, while Rangers equalised nine minutes later through Odoh Onorade.

The game, however, ended 3-2 in favour of Rangers who dominated the better part of the second half of the game.

Although Rangers won the game, Coach Imama Amakapabo expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of his team but added that he would work harder to get to the final of the tournament.

Kwara United Coach, Tunde Sanni, said that they were the better team that deserved the victory but his boys were punished for lack of concentration in the second half.

With this victory, Rangers will now face El-Kanemi Warriors in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Lobi Stars will square up against BJ Foundation, while Ifeanyi Ubah will face Nasarawa United. Akwa United will battle Niger Tornadoes Feeders.

Other Round of 16 matches of the Federation Cup were decided on Wednesday.

 

Heartland, Dolphins, Plateau United Crash Out Of Federation Cup

Heartland suffered a shocking 3-2 defeat to a non-league side, BJ Foundation of Edo State in the round of 16, while Dolphins also lost to a second division side, Tornadoes Feeders, 4-2 on penalties.

For Plateau United, they narrowly lost by a lone goal to Premier League side, El-Kanmei Warriors and Remo Stars’ run came to an end after they fell 5-3 on penalties to Lobi Stars of Makurdi.

However, Ifeanyi Ubah and Nasarawa United booked their places in the quarter-finals after securing vital wins over FC Taraba and Abia Warriors, while Akwa United needed an 85th minute goal to send Prime FC out of the competition.

In the quarter-finals, Lobi Stars will square up against BJ Foundation, while Ifeanyi Ubah will face Nasarawa United.

Akwa United will battle Niger Tornadoes Feeders, and El-Kanemi Warriors will await the winner of the match between Kwara United and Enugu Rangers which is scheduled for Thursday in Abuja.
