A suicide bomb attack outside the Church of Christ in the central city of Jos killed three people and left at least 38 wounded today, reports said.
According to witnesses, a car bomb was driven outside the church by the attacker who then blew himself up during morning service at the church. Jos state’s spokesman Pam Ayuba said “the bomber tried driving into the church premises, but the car exploded outside.”
Ayuba said the suicide bomber, as well as a father and child were killed in the attack. An eye witness, Kachallom Dauda, who saw the suicide bomber, described him as young.
“I saw the boy, he was dressed in a shirt and looked like a teenager or young adult,” Dauda said.
The eye witness said the young attacker had driven past the church twice before attempting forced entry into the packed church car park the third time around.
Dauda reported hearing “a loud blast” next.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks yet. However, it bears the hallmarks of attacks orchestrated by radical Islamic sect Boko Haram who claimed responsibility for the deadly Christmas Day bombings in 2011 that killed at least 50 lives in three separate northern states.
According to reports, the church, located in Jos, the capital of Plateau state is popular among locals in Plateau state and has been attended by state governor Jonah Jang. However, reports say it is not clear the governor was in the church building at the time of the explosion.
