A public affairs analyst and legal practitioner, Robert Clarke, on Wednesday said that the spate of kidnapping has greatly increased in the country alleging that one Nigerian is kidnapped every five minutes.

Speaking on Sunrise Daily, a daily breakfast programme on Channels Television, he faulted the President for only mentioning the issue of Boko Haram during his Independence Day address on Tuesday, adding that “kidnapping is taking a tremendous step. Within the next two years, if we are not careful, Mr. President himself would be afraid to go in an entourage on the road.”

He adjudged that “every 5 minutes, a Nigerian is being kidnapped” every day.

The Nigeria Police, who he said are part of the best trained in the world, are aware of the locations of the kingpins, but will only go to the “kingpin’s nest” when a “big man” is kidnapped.

He stressed his point by saying “security wise, our police know everything”.

Speaking about Nigeria’s 53rd Independence anniversary, Mr Clarke said that “there is nothing to be happy about on this independence” because “Nigeria is not in a happy mood”

While speaking, he said that President Goodluck Jonathan’s promise to rededicate himself to the service of the nation is nothing new as “we have been hearing such statements from all our leaders, none has manifested into reality”.

Although 40 students of the College of Agriculture in Yobe state were killed by suspected Boko Haram members, 2 days before the October 1st, Mr Clarke stated that the insurgent group only accounts for a maximum of 10 percent of the security crisis in the nation.
