ArmyA retired officer of the Nigerian Army has commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for achievements recorded in the fight against the Boko Haram sect in the northeast.

“Our performance (Army) so far, is commendable – though, we still have room for improvement.

“All these pocket of actions existing here and there are things we anticipate, but as we drive on, we would see that eventually, all these would die off,” Colonel Stan-Labo said, while giving his opinion on the counter-terrorism operations of the Army on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily On Monday.

The retired Army officer further gave accounts of how the military had made gains in the fight against the insurgents.

“As a professional, you look at the amount of heat we were receiving from the insurgents at the beginning of the whole thing and what is the response today.

“How much of confidence have we been able to foster in our men by virtue of the equipment. They have now moved forward by virtue of all the logistics available.

“We have quite a committed leadership that is not distracted,” he explained.

Giving his opinion about the role of the Army after the insurgents had written to communities about their intention to attack, Colonel Stan-labo said: “You cannot pin a soldier to every inch of land around you. The community must be ready to be of help – giving enough information which eventually gets crystallised into intelligence.

Preventive Terrorism Initiatives

Colonel Stan-Labo spoke further on what the military should do with the information given to them about the insurgents and the channels through which individuals could route information to the military.

The former Head of Training Division at the Nigerian Army Peacekeeping Centre, said that he expected that more channels should have been established.

“I expect that intelligence personnel in plain cloth, must have penetrated these communities – leadership of the communities know some of them, so information flows in that direction,” he said.

While giving suggestions on how the military can sustain their victory in the counter-terrorism operations, the retired military officer said that “outside intelligence, which we have over flogged, so to speak, I expect that all our PTIs will begin to ensure we are able to create an established preventive terrorism initiatives.

“We would begin to take a good look at all the reports that had emanated from past incidents and try to see how we can implement these reports”.
