Suspected members of Boko Haram sacks another police station in Kano state

Gunmen suspected to be members of the radical Islamic sect, Boko Haram on Friday attacked the Rijiyar Zaki police station in Ungogo local government area of Kano state injuring three policemen.

The Kano state police spokesman Magaji Musa Majiya who confirmed the attack said that the assailants escaped on their motorbikes.

According to agency reports, the police officers at the station had fled in different directions as the gunmen fired shots at their station.
The number of casualties is yet to be confirmed, but the area has been reportedly cordoned by soldiers from the joint task force.

President Goodluck Jonathan had accused the militant Islamist group of killing a British and an Italian hostage on Thursday during a failed attempt by U.K. and Nigerian forces to rescue them.

The hostages, Chris McManus, a British citizen, and Franco Lamolinara, an Italian, were killed “by their Boko Haram captors before they could be rescued by a joint security raid on the kidnappers’ hideout” in the northern state of Sokoto, Jonathan’s office said in a statement late yesterday from Abuja, the capital.

The group is believed to be responsible for 300 deaths so far this year, including the 200 slaughtered in the northern city of Kano in January. In recent months, Boko Haram has said its goals are to establish an Islamic state in Nigeria, and to free imprisoned members.
