One person was on Monday killed and two others injured in the violence that ensued between rival factions of the Drivers Welfare Scheme in Edo State who had gone on a solidarity protest to the office of the Independent Electoral Commission, Edo State.

The Speaker of the Association Moses Gbegene who brought their dead member to the Press Centre of the Nigeria Union of Journalist said his group is protesting the violence by meted on them by their rival factions.

Mr Gbegene called for justice for the killers of Omosigho Wilfred and two of their colleagues injured in the fracas.

The protesters who said they were on a peaceful protest despite the provocation called on the state government to intervene within the next 24 hours else they will take laws into their hands.

“We had gone to the INEC office to show our solidarity with the governor. We did not go there prepared for a fight. But to our surprise the other faction attacked us and killed one of our member,” Osawensa Irawoyi, a member of the Drivers Welfare Scheme told Channels Television correspondent.

He said that for the past 12 years that Henry Okaka had presided over the association, there have been no improvement in association and that was the reason why his faction broke away.

“Because of this, anywhere they see us; they will want to harass us. This is not the first, second or third time they will be attacking us,” Mr Irawoyi, who had bandage around his head said.

A similar incident happened last year when members of the Drivers’ Welfare Scheme (DWS) and a revenue collection team, headed by Tony Kabaka, clashed with members of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN).

The clash which disrupted activities around Mission road and the New Benin Market left over ten people injured.
